ABOUTAbout us

01

For Apple, and only Apple

We make software only for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. The comfort of Apple's devices is the thing we treasure most.

02

Handmade, with care

The art, the voices, the motion — we polish them all by hand until they feel right. If we come across as a little particular, it's probably because we are.

03

From the PC-88VA to today

We've been making games since around 1991, from the days of 16-color screens and 5-inch floppy disks. We're bringing our old works back to life on today's Macs, too.

HISTORYThe story of UPYOLIC SOFT

  1. The beginning

Making games with friends from the club

UPYOLIC SOFT began when friends from the Electronics Club at Waseda University Honjo Senior High School kept making games together after graduating.

  2. around 1991PC-9801 / PC-88VA

    16-color screens and 5-inch floppies

The screen could show just 16 colors. We wrote our programs in C, and played music through a borrowed DOS music driver. The finished software went onto 5-inch floppy disks, which we handed out at Comiket and Pasoket.

    • Saishu Heiki UPO
    • a hanafuda game (under a different name back then)
  3. around 2003After university

Koikoi Komachi X through XI, built in Xojo

After we graduated, the member who handled the programming left. So we moved to Xojo, a development environment for building quickly in a high-level language, and made Koikoi Komachi X, Koikoi Komachi Pure, Koikoi Komachi HD, and Koikoi Komachi XI.

  4. A long silence

The art we wanted to draw outran our tools

Xojo was easy to build with, but its graphics were weak and it couldn't make use of the GPU. On top of that, Macs moved to Intel processors, our enthusiasm cooled, and several projects fell through.

UPYOLIC SOFT went quiet for a long time. Even so — to get away from Xojo, whose price kept climbing as the yen weakened — we kept slowly moving toward Xcode, free for Apple developers, and learning Swift.

  5. 2020The M1 arrives

Reviving the stalled Koikoi Komachi NR

In 2020, Macs with Apple's M1 silicon appeared. That became the spark to start imagining the stalled Koikoi Komachi NR once more.

The Mac development world had changed completely. Swift freed us from thorny languages like Objective-C, and SpriteKit made 2D graphics easy to handle. The long-wished move from Xojo to Xcode finally came true.

  6. 2026Now

Back to the origin: Koikoi Komachi

As we built, we settled the title by returning to the origin: Koikoi Komachi. The art uses the new illustrations drawn for Koikoi Komachi NR. Today we make software only for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, and we're preparing a new ‘Koikoi Komachi’ with the characters' voices and expressions crafted in loving detail.
